Becoming Familiar with Programapedia

From Programapedia

Programapedia is a wiki devoted to library programming. Initiated by the Prairie Area Library System and the Shawnee Library System, Programapedia allows wiki authors to enter information related to speakers, companies and library programs of note. Any staff member from an Illinois library who is a member of a library system may become an author and submit data. The wiki is intended to be a shared repository of programming resources and ideas.

Authorship is available to approved librarians within Illinois who are a member of a library system. The wiki system operators must approve account requests before a new wiki author account is created. The information is freely available to anyone on the Internet and any wiki author can add and update information on Programapedia, after they have successfully created an account and it has been approved.

Before you start entering library program information, visit Programapedia as a visitor to get a sense for the type of information available and to determine what additional programming information would be useful in the wiki. While anyone can visit and use the information within Programapedia, the responsibility of information maintenance and content development resides with specific member libraries.

The URL for Programapedia is: http://www.programapedia.org. When you visit the Programapedia home page, look through the tabs along the top of the Main Page. The article, discussion, view source and history tabs can be accessed without logging into the wiki. The edit tab is only visible once an author has been approved and is logged into Programapedia.

Notice the additional edit tab and profile information when an author is logged into the wiki. Authors may edit an article (wiki page), move the article (similar to renaming), and add it to a watchlist. Articles added to your watchlist will be monitored for changes. Depending on how you have your profile preferences set, change notifications can be sent via automated email.

Some conventions are useful to understand when working within Programapedia. Any link to internal pages in the Wiki displays as a regular web link. Links to external resources (those "outside" of Programapedia) display with an arrow at the end of the link which represents a webpage outside of Programapedia. The example below highlights the external link to the Media Wiki User’s Guide, an excellent resource for learning more about editing Wiki content.
